Appointment of CoGTA DG welcomed – Committee

Hopes that the dept will prioritise the filling of other vacant senior management positions

Committee on COGTA welcomes appointment of Director-General

3 May 2023

The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs welcomes the appointment of the new Director-General (DG) of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Mbulelo Tshangana.

The committee has noted with concern that several senior management positions in the department are vacant and hopes that the appointment of the new DG will bring about the required leadership stability. The committee hopes that the department will prioritise the filling of the vacant senior management positions. Vacant positions at senior leadership level delay the implementation of planned programmes and have a negative impact on the delivery of services.

The committee acknowledges the contributions made by the previous DG, Ms Avril Williamson, over her last three years at the helm, including the reduction of audit qualification areas relating to the administration of the Community Work Programme (CWP). The new DG is encouraged to sustain these gains and lead the department to even better audit outcomes.

The committee looks forward to a good working relationship with the new incumbent and hopes that he will speedily familiarise himself with the critical issues previously raised by the committee in relation to the department’s cooperative government mandate.
