McBride appointment a slap in the face of the public
"The approval of Robert McBride's appointment as executive director of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) by the Parliamentary portfolio committee on Police is a slap in the face of the public," Dr. Pieter Groenewald, the chief spokesperson on Police for the Freedom Front Plus says.
"IPID is the watchdog of the public over the Police and investigates complaints of the public about the Police. The public should therefore be able to trust the chief of IPID. McBride is extremely controversial due to his involvement in charges of crimes such as arms smuggling and assault, which was never pursued by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
McBride's friendship with Cyril Beeka of the criminal under-world is reminiscent of Selebi's friendship with Agliotti. McBride is a controversial person and the public cannot be expected to have any faith in him. The minister of Police, Mr. Nathi Mthethwa, and the ANC are therefore making the interests of the public subservient to the ANC's interests," Groenewald said.
