ANC STATEMENT ON THE MURDER OF INKOSI ZONDI
It is with deep regret and a profound sense of loss that the African National Congress (ANC) has learnt of the passing away of Inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi.
Zondi, 39, was brutally assassinated this morning (22 January 2009) in Umlazi, South of Durban.
Zondi was a direct great grandson of Inkosi Bhambatha Zondi who led the historic rebellion against the British colonial rule in 1906. He was a loyal and active ANC member. He worked hard in drumming support for the ANC in Msinga and enjoyed a close relationship with the ANC President Jacob Zuma.
Zuma - on his own behalf and that of the organisation - extends his deep felt condolences to the family of Inkosi Zondi.
Inkosi Zondi, was a true democrat who facilitated for all political parties to have freedom of expression in the area of Msinga. He was a developmentalist who put his people first. His efforts bore fruits of a game reserve that not only continue to create employment but protect and preserve the environment.
The House of Bambatha has lost a remarkable son of the South African soil.
Two weeks ago Inkosi Zondi held a ceremony where he honoured the ANC President and Premier Sbu Ndebele for playing a key role in restoring the chieftaincy of the Zondi clan.
The President of the ANC who recently attended a development conference hosted by Inkosi Zondi on 10 December 2008, recalls his true commitment to the people of South Africa. "He was a friend of the ANC and a friend of democracy. His loss will greatly be felt," said Zuma who is also related to Inkosi Zondi.
Zondi's death is not only a major loss to his clan and people but to the ANC and the province as a whole.
As the ANC we want to extend our deepest condolences to the Zondi family and call upon police to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book so they can face the full might of the law.
We also call upon the Umlazi communinity who witnessed this horrific act to come forward and assist police with information.
The ANC expresses its grief and sorrow to His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini and the people of Msinga.
May his soul rest in peace.
