Solidarity shocked by attack on Roodt
24 July 2015
This morning trade union Solidarity learned with shock about the attack on Dawie Roodt and his family. Roodt was wounded in his arm during the attack and he also sustained a head injury. However, after an operation yesterday evening in the Pretoria East Hospital, he is out of danger.
Dirk Hermann, Chief Executive of Solidarity, wished Roodt a speedy recovery and wished his family all the best on behalf of the Solidarity Movement.
“Unfortunately incidents such as these have become a daily occurrence in South Africa. Over the last 24 hours, five people have been killed in robberies. We are just grateful that the Roodt family have been spared,” Hermann said.
“Unfortunately we can no longer rely on the state to fulfil its duty to safeguard citizens and to fight crime effectively. Therefore we appeal to communities to take responsibility themselves and to get involved in community safety projects.”
