Tshwane Automotive Hub expansion set to create 20 000 jobs

17 October 2019

The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the City of Tshwane’s plans to create more than 20 000 permanent and temporary automotive jobs for residents through investments in the Tshwane Automotive Hub in Silverton.

The Tshwane Automotive Hub initiative, a partnership between the City of Tshwane, the Gauteng Provincial Government and the Department of Trade and Industry, is set to be a significant economic zone for the automotive sector in Gauteng.

In September 2019, Trade and Industry Minister, Ebrahim Patel, proposed, through the Government Gazette, to extend the OR Tambo Special Economic Zone in Silverton, to incorporate the Tshwane Automotive Hub Special Economic Zone.

The DA-led City of Tshwane hosted public hearings on this proposed extension.

In 2016, Iveco-Larimar invested R600 million at its Rosslyn plant creating 1 000 new jobs.

During the same year, Ford invested R2.5 billion at its Silverton plant, generating 1 200 new jobs, and in June this year, Ford employed a further 1 200 new workers to produce the new Ford Everest SUV.

In April this year, Nissan invested R3 billion at its Rosslyn plant to expand its manufacturing capacity, adding 1 200 full-time jobs with the start of the production of the new Navara.

This initiative will make the DA-led City of Tshwane a world class automotive city on the continent and uplift the lives of residents.

Furthermore, it proves the DA's commitment to building a South Africa, where there is a job in every home.

Since the DA took over administration of Tshwane three years ago, it has become a preferred business destination by attracting billions in investments.

The DA applauds Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa’s vision of creating an environment that allows job creation, delivers better services, and eliminates corruption.

Where the Democratic Alliance (DA) governs it turns the tide for job creation.

Only the DA can bring change that builds One South Africa for All.
