Baleka Mbete stalling on secret ballot for MONC - John Steenhuisen

DA Chief Whip says Tuesday’s Motion promises to be one of the most important in history

Speaker stalling on MONC secret ballot

29 February 2016

To date over 1 million letters lobbying the ANC National Assembly Caucus to support tomorrow’s Motion of No Confidence in President Zuma have been sent through our online platform.

This is a monumental moment ahead of tomorrow’s motion and a clear indication that South Africans are increasingly tired of the President’s poor performance and are putting their support behind the opposition.

Last week DA Leader, Mmusi Maimane requested that the voting in tomorrow’s Motion of No Confidence in President Zuma be done via secret ballot, to ensure that MPs are not threatened with fear of internal persecution and are able to vote with their conscience.

However to date we have not received a response from the Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete, nor her office. This seems like yet another of the Speaker’s signature stall tactics and is simply unacceptable considering the fact that the motion is scheduled for tomorrow and the severity of its nature.

We have today written the Speaker and once again appealed for a secret ballot from tomorrow’s Motion of No Confidence vote.

Tomorrow’s Motion promises to be one of the most important in history, and it deserves to be done in as fair a manner as possible.
