"Behind bars!" – Daily Sun

"Number 1 Tsotsi hit maker Magesh falls foul of the law for not paying bar bill!" – front page lead, June 24 2015

Daily Sun (June 24 2015) - MAGESH IS living up to the title of his famous song.

The singer of Number 1 Tsotsi is behind bars after an argument about a bill in a tavern.

THE KWAITO STAR WAS ARRESTED FOR REFUSING TO PAY R62 FOR HIS DRINKS.

Magesh (38), from TKZee, was in Cubana Lounge in Bloemfontein, Free State on Monday night with a friend (30). They ordered two 330ml Savannas, but when the bill came Magesh refused to pay.

According to a source he allegedly tried to leave without paying for his drinks and was stopped by a waitress.

Speaking to Daily Sun, a patron who saw the events unfold in front of their eyes said Magesh allegedly complained that the drinks cost too much.

“Magesh and his friend ordered two drinks. Then the waitress asked him to pay when she saw him trying to leave without settling his bill,” said the witness.

“The star then told her the drinks were expensive. He said he had his own club in Joburg that didn’t charge that much.”

The source said the argument lasted about two hours as the staff pleaded with him to pay his bill, but he kept refusing.

“The waitress called the Park Road police after he refused to pay for the two ciders he had finished,” said the witness.

“When he saw the cops he changed his tune. He said he was famous and had money but then began to negotiate, offering to pay R40.”

By now it was closing time. The people were going home and the music had been turned off.

“Magesh caused a scene and told the cops that the prices were expensive and he wouldn’t pay.”

That’s when Magesh was arrested.

Magesh’s father, Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala, a former Bafana Bafana head coach and member of Pirates management team, refused to comment.

He said he didn’t want to be part of the story.

At Cubana, a woman called Julia, who said she was a manager, said she couldn’t comment and would forward the questions to the owner. At the time of going to print the owner hadn’t responded.

Police spokesman Captain Chaka Marope confirmed the incident.

“The artist and his friend were arrested and charged with theft after they allegedly failed to pay a bill of R62. They will appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court today,” said Marope.

Magesh, whose real name is Tokollo Tshabalala, was previously arrested and appeared in court for allegedly assaulting ex-TKZee band member Zwai Bala. He was also charged with culpable homicide for allegedly killing two people in a car accident in Botswana, for which he was acquitted in 2008.
