Blue light bullies: 10 days later and still no arrests
13 July 2023
Today marks the tenth day since the incident involving the assault on civilians by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) VIP policing unit was reported. Astonishingly, not a single perpetrator has been arrested thus far.
This raises a critical question: Are they being politically protected? It is difficult to ignore the glaring disparity in treatment. Had these perpetrators not been presidential protectors or associated with Deputy President Paul Mashatile, we believe they would have been apprehended days ago. This scenario is reminiscent of George Orwell's Animal Farm, where "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
The DA calls upon Police Minister Bheki Cele to take immediate action and arrest the perpetrators. Minister Cele possesses knowledge of their identities and the victims involved, in addition to clear video footage documenting the incident. It is time to cease attempts to sweep this grave incident under the carpet. The DA will not stand idly by and allow such behavior to go unchecked.
We are aware of the Minister's affinity for grandstanding in front of cameras. Therefore, we urge him to hold a press conference before the end of the day and announce the arrest of the attackers. The public demands transparency and swift justice.
