Business Day report misleading and mischievous - SADTU

Spokesperson Nomusa Cembi says Sam Mkokeli quoted him of of context

FOR THE RECORD

In the Business Day article headlined: "Now teachers union joins in call for nationalization." Published on the 13th of July, I would like to place it on record that the Political Editor Sam Mkokeli quoted me out of context (see here).

The introduction - Even teachers want SA's mines to be nationalized - is misleading and mischevious.

Mr MKokeli asked me about SADTU's stance on nationalization, not on the nationalization of mines. He didn't put his question into context, hence my response that SADTU's stand was the same as COSATU's which we are affiliated under. When he asked for a more detailed answer, I referred him to the General Secretary Mugwena Maluleke and even gave him his telephone numbers but he didn't bother to call him.

Mr Mkokeli was simply trying to create a story where none existed. He knew what his story was before he began gathering information and writing it down. He then chose his selective questioning in order to suit his desired outcome.

The headline - "Now teacher union joins in call for nationalization" pegs the story on SADTU when we feature in a single paragraph in the entire article.

I would urge journalists to work towards serving the best interests of the country and not for those who seek to sow divisions in the Alliance.
