By-elections: ANC holds to seats, loses one to IFP - IEC

Sibonelo Victor Mathenjwa wins Ward 2 in Jozini Municipality from ANC with 58% of votes cast

Results of the municipal by-elections held on 4 April 2018

During the by-elections contested yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal, the African National Congress (ANC) retained two seats and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) gained one seat. 

The new councillors for the ANC are:

Mbali Judith Cele in Ward 16 in the Umdoni Municipality – KZN212. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a reduced margin of 60.38% of the votes cast compared to 73.83% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 34.55%.  

Patience Nonhlanhla Maphanga in Ward 3 in the Mkhambathini Municipality – KZN226. The party retained the seat it won in the 2016 Municipal Elections, however with a slightly reduced margin of 54.63% of the votes cast compared to 56.24% in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 38.94%.  

The new councillor for the IFP is Sibonelo Victor Mathenjwa in Ward 2 in Jozini Municipality – KZN272. The party won the seat from the ANC with 58.04% of the votes cast compared to 52.02% that the ANC received in the 2016 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 59.24%.
