City investigates Adult World store in Plein Street
May 29 2014
The City of Cape Town has noted the ongoing media reports about the reopening of an Adult World store in Plein Street, near Parliament, and has commenced an investigation.
The City's Health Directorate, which is responsible for issuing business licences under the Businesses Act of 1991, can confirm that a licence was issued to Arthur Calamaris in 2004 to operate Adult World (Pty) Ltd as the premises was found to comply with the provisions of the Act. However, it would appear that the business ceased to operate from the premises in the same year.
The City is currently investigating a number of aspects related to the mooted reopening of the business, including whether the premises remains compliant with the provisions of the Businesses Act and whether there have been any changes in ownership, which would necessitate a new licence application.
The investigation also involves liaising with the Film and Publications Board. In terms of legislation promulgated under the Films and Publications Act of 1996, persons who wish to distribute or exhibit in public any film, interactive computer game or publication which is rated as X18, must apply for permission from the Board for registration as a distributor and/or exhibitor.
