Explosion in Johannesburg CBD: Investigations underway and support mobilised for affected residents

The explosion yesterday early evening on Bree Street in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) shook the residents and motorists in the area and has caused several injuries and substantial damages to both infrastructure and vehicles in the immediate vicinity. Emergency services are currently on the scene, and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in the area.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this incident, we wish them a speedy recovery.

At this stage, the cause of the explosion is not confirmed and under investigation by the relevant authorities, who are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. We urge the public to remain patient and cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation but stay clear of the scene of the incident.

The extent of the injuries and damage at this stage include:

-One fatality reported.

-Total of 36 patients taken to various hospitals for treatment ranging from two critical, 8 moderate to severe injuries, to 26 minor injuries.

-37 minibus taxis damaged

- Simmonds Street and Bree Street, Harrison Street and Bree Street, and Loveday streets on both sides are closed off.

- Bree Street and surrounds are to be closed off indefinitely.

The DA’s caucus leader in Johannesburg, Cllr. Belinda Echeozonjoku was at the scene last night to assess the situation whilst DA Shadow MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun has been in constant contact with the relevant authorities to ensure that the residents are informed, and assistance offered to those in need.

We extend our gratitude to the emergency personnel, law enforcement agencies, and first responders who swiftly and bravely arrived at the scene to provide assistance. Their professionalism and dedication are commendable.

We understand that incidents of this nature can create fear and uncertainty in the community. We want to reassure everyone that every effort is being made to ensure the situation is brought under control and that all necessary resources are being deployed to manage the aftermath.
