Cele hearings begin on Monday - Board of Inquiry

Bongiwe Gambu says witnesses will be cross examined if necessary

HEARINGS TO BE HELD BY THE BOARD OF INQUIRY INTO ALLEGATIONS OF MISCONDUCT BY NATIONAL COMMISSIONER OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE ARE DUE TO START TOMORROW, MARCH 05TH

Members of the public and media are invited to attend hearings as part of the process of the Board of Inquiry established to look into allegations of misconduct against National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele.

In November 2011 President Zuma announced the establishment of the Board of Inquiry to probe allegations of misconduct by the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Bheki Cele or into his fitness for the office or into his capacity for the execution of his duties efficiently, in relation to the procurement of office accommodation for the South African Police Service in Pretoria and Durban, as part of the findings and recommendations of the Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela.

The hearings will start daily at 10am and are expected to end at 4pm daily.

The following format will apply:

Official Opening by Chairperson of the Board
Opening address by evidence leader Adv. Viwe Notshe SC
Opening Statement by counsel for National Commissioner General Cele, Adv. Vincent Maleka SC
Presentation of witness statements/affidavits
Witness cross-examination if necessary
Re-examination

Members of the media attending the hearings must be at the venue at 09h00 to allow for set-up.
