FW de Klerk Foundation Releases Constitutional measurement of political parties’ actions

28 May 2024

The FW de Klerk Foundation herewith releases its comprehensive assessment and ranking of whether parties’ conduct aligns with the Constitution’s values and the Bill of Rights. “The goal is to see if everyone who talks the talk, walks the walk,” says Christo van der Rheede, the Foundation’s Executive Director.

This release follows on the heels of the Foundation’s first comprehensive assessment that studied the constitutional compliance of political parties’ election manifestos. The manifestos were then ranked on their compliance.

The first and second assessments are different from each other, in that the first assessment looked at the parties’ manifestos, while this second assessment looks at the parties’ actions and rhetoric,” said Ismail Joosub, Legal Officer at the Foundation. “We hope it will be a helpful source of information for South Africans, to examine which political parties have upheld their constitutional rights and which have flouted them.”
