ActionSA cautiously welcomes the construction of the billion-rand academic hospital

31 May 2023

ActionSA welcomes the newly commissioned Limpopo Central Academic Hospital that is set to be constructed in Polokwane.

We believe this new development, that is said to change the landscape of healthcare in the province, will meet the ever-growing demand for quality health services and unlock employment opportunities for the bulk of unemployed young people in this province.

Although a project of this magnitude will propagate the development of Polokwane as an aspiring metro city, we are cautious in our enthusiasm, owing to the multiple mega projects that have failed to lift off during the Mathabatha Administration.

While spirits are high on the novelty of this project, we implore the Health Department MEC, Phophi Ramathuba, to take a moment to remember the region’s existing but collapsing healthcare system that desperately needs resuscitation.

Elim Hospital in the Vhembe District, Philadelphia Hospital in the Sekhukhune District - were also, once upon a time, ground-breaking hospitals earmarked to improve the landscape of healthcare in our province and are now a sore sight for patients and crumbling due to gross mismanagement and poor governance under the watchful eye of MEC Ramathuba.

The people of this province deserve to receive healthcare as enshrined in the Constitution and the country’s patients’ charter.

ActionSA will be vigilant to monitor this multi-billion-rand project for the benefit of our people, careful not to let well-meaning projects turn into cash cows that will bankroll the ruling party’s campaigns for the upcoming 2024 National Elections.
