COPE backs judicial review of NPA decision

Party says dropping of Zuma charges impacts negatively on constitutional order

COPE SUPPORTS CALLS FOR A JUDICIAL REVIEW IN ZUMA MATTER

The Congress of the People supports calls for a judicial review of Adv Mokotedi Mpshe's decision to drop charges against ANC president, Jacob Zuma.

We believe strongly that this decision impacts negatively on our constitutional order and undermine the fundamental principle of "all shall be equal before the law".

We also question how the tapes, allegedly recorded by the National Intelligence Agency, landed in the hands of private citizens, in this case Mr Zuma's lawyers. This appears as another example of the abuse of state institutions to achieve political goals.

It is becoming clear that state security institutions were used to settle factional battles within the ruling party. We view this as a serious threat to national security.

COPE is currently consulting a number of public stakeholders in the country to formulate a comprehensive response to this sorry state of affairs.

South Africans must come out in big numbers on Election Day and vote to protect our constitutional order.

Our young democracy is too precious to be left to people who have no respect for the constitution.
