COSATU WCape secures great deal with Metrorail - Tony Ehrenreich

Fare increases negotiated down to 13%, as opposed to the 27% initially announced

COSATU secures great deal with Metrorail on fare prices!!

COSATU, in negotiations with Metrorail and the Cape Chamber of Commerce, have agreed that the fare increase on monthly tickets will only be 13%. This is down from the 27% that Metrorail initially announced. Weekly and daily tickets will still be increased by 21%, but the majority of COSATU members who buy monthly tickets, will definitely benefit from this deal.

COSATU, over the next few months will continue in negotiations with Metrorail on consolidation of the zones and results thereof will be announced in future.

COSATU also agreed with Metrorail on a number of social features:

  • The expansion of the pensioners' free trains every Tuesday;
  • 20% of the current fare for the unemployed to use trains off peak hours to seek employment;
  • 20% of the current fare for children commuting to and from schools, so they can also travel after peak hours;
  • The provision of free trains on Sundays for families at a nominal fee of R10.00 per family, for trips to the beach, etc., to enhance family socialization.

COSATU welcomes the agreement and look forward to resolving other transport issues with Metrorail in future.
