Student protest damages in 2015/16 cost at least R300m - Blade Nzimande

Minister expresses worry over particular fringe groups who have captured and redirected genuine grievances into violent action

The Cost of Damages to Property in our Universities resulting from 2016 Students Protests

12 April 2016

Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande is astounded by the extent of damage to property that has occurred as a result of students protest in the recent period of the 2015/16 financial year.

“It cannot be acceptable from us as government that students protests are resulting into violence and destruction of universities’ property that belong to the public of South Africa and future generations to come. We have agreed that law enforcement agencies must work with us in protecting the property, students and the staff as a whole.
