DA welcomes Court's dismissal of ANC’s appeal on cadre deployment contempt

4 October 2024

The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes today’s ruling by the Johannesburg High Court dismissing the ANC’s desperate attempt to appeal the court’s finding of civil contempt in relation to the ongoing cadre deployment corruption case.

In a victory for transparency and accountability, Judge Wanless reaffirmed that the ANC, alongside Fikile Mbalula and Thapelo Masilela, failed to comply with a previous court order requiring them to release critical documents related to cadre deployment.

This ruling marks a decisive blow to the ANC’s efforts to shield its corrupt cadre deployment network from public scrutiny and further exposes the party’s role in facilitating state capture.

Today’s judgment dismissed the ANC’s application for leave to appeal on the grounds that they failed to provide any new substantive evidence or grounds that could lead another court to reach a different decision. The court also reaffirmed that the ANC must pay all legal costs on a punitive scale, reflecting the severity of their obstruction in this matter.

The DA has long held that cadre deployment is at the heart of the ANC’s system of corruption and state capture. Since our victory in the Constitutional Court, which forced the ANC to release its cadre deployment records, we have uncovered a web of politically motivated appointments that has crippled service delivery and undermined the professionalism of the public service.

We urge the ANC to stop its Stalingrad tactics and comply fully with the court's orders. The people of South Africa deserve to know the truth about the corrupt practices that have undermined our institutions and compromised our democracy.

As a key participant in the Government of National Unity (GNU), the DA is committed to holding the ANC accountable for its actions and advocating for reforms that prioritise transparency and integrity within our governance structures. We will work tirelessly to dismantle the cadre deployment network that has corrupted our state and destroyed essential services.

The DA is dedicated to ensuring that our government is capable, professional, and ethical, putting the needs of all South Africans first. Together, we can forge a future rooted in accountability and good governance, free from the clutches of corruption
