LEADER OF THE OFFICIAL OPPOSITION - CITY OF CAPE TOWN
OPEN LETTER TO THE MAYOR
To: The Mayor
Re: CRISIS OF GOVERNANCE IN THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN
Dear Madam Mayor
Please receive correspondence from my office in relation to the developments at the Council in the City of Cape Town.
The recent developments in the Council and in the different institutions of Governance at a Provincial and National level has brought Governance into disrepute in the eyes of our people. These events undermine the standing of Governance and makes our people lose hope in the institutions of governance. This is clearly a less than ideal situation given the rising levels of social upheaval and protest, due to lack of delivery and growing inequalities.
At a broader level this crisis of governance is also driving a wedge between the citizens, in a City that is already very divided. The lack of leadership at all levels of the Council needs to be attended to urgently if we are to undo the deepening levels of distrust and redress the social injury of so many communities, with the urgency required.
We are proposing a meeting of all the parties to the Council at a senior level, to restore the integrity of the House. This meeting must also look at ways in which we can prioritise the urgent needs of the citizens of the City and stop this renaming gimmicks that just further divides our communities. It is less important who is right or who is wrong and more important that we find a lasting solution that restores the integrity of the Council and speeds up service delivery.
We are taking this unusual step in requesting and convening this meeting through the Council structures given the Mayor's inability to lead the City out of this crisis. We look forward to your urgent reply to our proposal.
Yours faithfully
Councillor Tony Ehrenreich
