Resignation of Anglo American's CEO a huge loss - Solidarity
Trade union Solidarity today said the resignation of Cynthia Carroll, CEO of mining giant Anglo American, is a huge loss for both the company and the South African mining industry. The company today announced that Carroll had resigned after more than five years as chief executive.
According to Gideon du Plessis, General Secretary of Solidarity, Carroll's resignation is a major setback for the local mining industry and for the country's image as an investment destination. ‘Carroll continually championed South Africa's mining industry abroad. Solidarity was always impressed with her continued focus on the importance of occupational health and safety, in particular. It is disturbing that key persons in the industry are losing faith in South Africa's mining industry.'
Du Plessis praised Carroll for her trailblazing efforts in building relations between the Department of Mineral Resource, Anglo American's management and trade unions. She succeeded in establishing a formal alliance between these parties. ‘Carroll was never afraid to make and to carry out the right decisions - whether they were popular or not. Her legacy is undoubtedly one for which she will be remembered in the industry. Solidarity wishes her well in her future endeavours.'
