DA asks for Nkandla committee to be re-established - James Selfe

CFE says formal request to Speaker Baleka Mbete is a test of her independence

DA calls on re-establishment of Nkandla ad-hoc committee

22 May 2014

The DA yesterday formally requested newly elected Speaker, Baleta Mbeke, to re-establish the Nkandla ad-hoc committee without delay.

The ad-hoc committee on the President's submissions in response to the Public Protector's report on the security upgrades to his Nkandla residence was unable to complete its work given the limited time, scope and deliberate stalling by the ANC delegates on the committee, before the dissolution of the 4th Parliament.

Parliament is not a rubber stamp for Luthuli House.

Baleka Mbete should prove to Parliament and the people of South Africa that her position as ANC national chairperson is not interfering with her obligation to Parliament.

Speaker Mbete should honour both the intentions of her predecessor, Max Sisulu, as well as the agreement by the committee, that the 5th Parliament should reconvene the committee to continue its work.

The DA has urged the Speaker to re-establish the ad hoc committee before Friday 6 June 2014 and allow it the appropriate scope, time and resources to conclude its work.

Parliament has a responsibility to act on behalf of the people in fighting corruption and maladministration. Speaker Mbete has a duty to uphold this.

Statement issued by James Selfe MP, Chairperson of DA Federal Executive, May 22 2014
