DA chases up Eskom’s R840-million wasted Ghost Town with SIU

17 November 2024

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to the SIU on its investigation into the R840-million rand Wilge Residential Complex, left abandoned and in ruin by Eskom.

We have requested an update on the progress of the investigation, because of how serious and brazen Eskom’s waste of money at Wilge has been revealed to be.

The last report to Parliament, in June 2023, was that the SIU still had this matter “under investigation.”  At the time the report stated that the SIU was investigating “allegations of fraud, corruption and financial misconduct (involving fruitless and wasteful expenditure estimated at R840m)”

After an oversight to the crumbling residential complex in the past days, the DA is determined to see justice done for the enormous waste of public money, and residential complex that has been left to fall to ruin.

Eskom cannot be allowed to waste R840-million while it simultaneously asks NERSA for an electricity tariff hike that could see power bills go up by 40% next year.

The DA looks forward to an update from the SIU.
