DA deeply saddened by deaths at Durban orphanage

Party calls on KZN Social Development MEC to investigate fire and get to the bottom of what caused it

DA deeply saddened by deaths at Durban orphanage

14 July 2016

The DA is deeply saddened by the deaths of eight children following a fire in the early hours of the morning at a Parlock orphanage.

It is especially saddening when young lives so full of potential are cut short in such a tragic manner.

We send our sincere condolences to the extended families of these young people and to the surrounding community. We also extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery to those who have been hospitalised as a result of their fire injuries.

The DA recognises that social sector non-government organisations – including orphanages and old age homes - are under severe financial pressure due to a lack of tariff increases. As a result many are struggling to roll out their services and to ensure that facilities are properly maintained.

Given that the cause of the blaze remains unknown, the DA calls on KZN Social Development MEC, Weziwe Thusi to commit to an extensive and swift probe.

In addition, we expect her to ensure that her officials co-operate fully with investigating officers. In the event that the fire could have been avoided, any responsible parties must be held accountable.

We also call on the MEC to make trauma counselling and social workers available to assist those who have endured this horrific event.

The DA is committed to following this investigation and to ensuring that the cause of the fire is established.
