DA denied oversight at CPUT despite urgency – Chantel King

MP says it is the party’s responsibility to safeguard the well-being of students in our educational institutions

DA denied oversight at CPUT despite urgency in the wake of a horrific GBV incident

14 November 2023

Cape Peninsula University of Technology's (CPUT) refusal to allow a DA oversight visit following the recent Gender-Based Violence (GBV) incident on Saturday is disconcerting.

The DA had formally requested parliamentary oversight at CPUT, but regrettably, our request was denied. Despite this setback, the DA is resolute in fulfilling our oversight duties, and we will be conducting the oversight tomorrow morning, 15 November.

As elected representatives, it is our responsibility to conduct thorough oversight to safeguard the well-being of students in our educational institutions. Even in the wake of the tragic event, CPUT appears hesitant to engage openly on the matter and facilitate our oversight responsibilities.

It is imperative that CPUT prioritises transparency, cooperation, and a genuine commitment to addressing the safety concerns arising from this unfortunate incident. Our intention is to contribute constructively to resolving this issue and ensuring proactive measures are taken to prevent future occurrences.

In the collaborative spirit of creating safer learning environments, we call on CPUT to openly engage on the matter and welcome our oversight visit. Together, we can ensure that educational institutions uphold the highest standards of safety, security, and accountability.
