DA grows strongly in by-elections - Phumzile Van Damme

Ward 2 Kgatelopele victory means the party will take control of municipality

DA wins majority in Kgatelopele Municipality, amid strong by-election growth yesterday

The DA has won a governing majority in Kgatelopele Municipality, Northern Cape, and has achieved a significant surge in growth in by-elections across South Africa yesterday.

Voters in their numbers came out to support the DA yesterday, increasing our support in all wards, as the DA momentum from Election 2016 continues to grow.

The people of Ward 2, Kgatelopele, resoundingly endorsed the DA with over 70% of the vote and now with a majority of seats in the council, the DA will take governance of this municipality. This is an enormous increase of over 30 percentage points for the DA in this ward since the August 2016 election.

In Nelson Mandela Bay, after just three months of DA governance, voters in Wards 4 and 14 have recognised the DA’s brand of good governance and have increased support for the DA in both Wards.

In Ward 4 DA support has almost doubled (from 7.21% in August 2016) to 13.5% yesterday, and in New Brighton's Ward 14 DA support has grown (from 9.36% in August 2016) to 24.27% yesterday

This DA growth in Nelson Mandela Bay is a mark of faith in the DA government, from the people of the Metro.

Voters in Ward 11 of Raymond Mhlaba Municipality in the Eastern Cape came out to endorse the DA in the Ward of Fort Hare University Alice Campus, giving the DA 36.55% which is an increase of more than ten percentage points since August 2016.

In this Ward, for the first time, the DA has won the voting district housing Fort Hare University Alice Campus and reduced the ANC's vote by over 20 percentage points in that voting district.

Fort Hare continues to be a stronghold DA community, and we thank those who voted yesterday for endorsing us.

In KwaZulu Natal, the DA achieved a surge of growth in Ward 20 Alfred Duma Municipality, up from 24.55% in August 2016 to 35.97% yesterday and bringing the ANC down to just 50% in this ward.

In Mpumalanga’s Victor Kanye Municipality Ward 6 the DA achieved our highest ever vote percentage for that ward, with support up 2 percentage points to 33.9%

The DA has also grown significantly in Cape Town’s Ward 108, achieving over a six percentage point gain since the August 2016 election.

In every by-election contested by the DA yesterday we have grown and increased our vote share, while the ANC has declined.

From by-election to by-election DA growth will continue to make gains into ANC footholds, as the people of South Africa vote for the DA's brand of good governance that puts South Africa first, and vote against the Zuma ANC brand of corruption and state-capture.

The DA thanks every single one of our supporters who came out to contribute to these immensely successful by-election outcomes.
