18 July 2023
The DA is proud to announce the introduction of the Cyber Commissioner Bill, officially named the Constitution Twentieth Amendment Bill, into Parliament. This significant step aims to amend the Constitution and establish a new Chapter 9 institution dedicated to regulating cyber security in South Africa.
The urgent need for a dedicated Cyber Commissioner arises from the current inadequate protection of personal information by state departments. In today's digital age, cyber technology has become a vital component of government operations. With the increasing reliance on technology, it is crucial to develop new strategies to safeguard data and protect the rights of citizens utilising these technologies.

South African state departments and critical infrastructure are currently insufficiently protected against cyber threats and lack the necessary tools to defend sensitive public information from breaches.
