DA KZN welcomes Sheryl Cwele's dismissal

George Mari says convicted drug trafficker is likely to appeal ruling

THE Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has welcomed an announcement that convicted drug trafficker, Sheryl Cwele, has been axed from her post as head of health services within the Hibiscus Coast municipality.

DA KZN Co-operative Governance spokesperson, George Mari said his party was pleased with the announcement, which followed a meeting of the municipality's executive committee earlier today, at which the report on Cwele's disciplinary hearing was tabled.  According to Mari, Exco's decision will be referred to full council on 30 August.

"The DA welcomes Sheryl Cwele's dismissal after she was found guilty on 3 charges and commends the decision-makers on their resolution, which is clearly without fear or favour.  We believe that the decision to dismiss the wife of a national minister sets a new precedent in terms of how errant officials should be dealt with - regardless of how politically connected they may be.  As a manager within the municipality, Cwele was in a position of trust with a salary paid by taxpayers.  For her to have stayed on, as a convicted felon, would be inexcusable.  This outcome sets a new benchmark and the DA believes that justice has finally been served."

Mari said Cwele now had 10 days in which to appeal her dismissal.  "According to DA caucus leader within the municipality, Doug Rawlins, her lawyers have already indicated in writing that they intend to appeal the decision despite the fact that she has already been found guilty on charges of drug trafficking, improper conduct and failure to act in the best interests of the council.  Council has opposed the appeal and all indications are that the matter will finally be wound up within the next month at which time her salary will also be stopped."
