DA notes arrest of North West VBS suspect and hope that others will follow shortly

11 August 2021

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West notes the arrest of a suspect that is believed to have participated in the R92 million that the Mahikeng Local Municipality irregularly invested in the VBS Mutual Bank.

It is further alleged that the suspect purchased two vehicles and a property with the kickbacks received in turn for this investment.

We believe this is a step in the right direction and we hope that more arrests will follow soon.

Last year, during a press briefing that followed the arrest of key suspects in the VBS saga, the Directorate of Priority Crimes indicated that the second round of arrests will include municipal officials. It is encouraging to note that this promise is being honoured.

The DA will be waiting with much anticipation to see the third set of arrests that the Hawks had promised to be of high-profile political leaders behind the VBS saga.

We will closely monitor developments to ensure that even those North West municipal officials suspected of involvement, who resigned and took up positions in other provinces, will be arrested and prosecuted.

The VBS scandal proves that the ANC has no qualms about the abuse of public funds and even went as far as participating in a scheme that stole from the poor.

North West municipalities have completely collapsed under the ANC government. In the upcoming local government election, residents have an opportunity to get rid of them and vote for the DA that will get things done.
