DA requests meeting with Vavi - Lindiwe Mazibuko

Parliamentary leader would like to discuss COSATU's opposition to youth wage subsidy

I have written to the Secretary General of COSATU, Zwelinzima Vavi, to request a meeting with him to discuss a range of important issues, including the high levels of youth unemployment, and the need for innovative solutions to address these challenges. These issues, amongst others, are viewed seriously by both COSATU and the DA.

The Youth Wage Subsidy is a national government policy which has the potential to contribute significantly to the reduction of unemployment amongst young people. However, in his budget speech last month, Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan, revealed that the policy continues to be deadlocked at NEDLAC.

It is now becoming clear that the target date for implementation of 1st April 2012 will not be reached.

With youth unemployment at 37 % (60% if discouraged work seekers are included), young South Africans needs policies like the wage subsidy to be implemented as a matter of urgency. It is estimated that the delay  in implementation has already cost us as many as 260 000 first-time jobs.

While the contribution of all partners at NEDLAC is important, the body has had enough time to consider the proposal and make meaningful contributions.

I will constructively raise this issue with Mr Vavi and seek clarity on his and COSATU's continued opposition to the policy. I believe that a such a discussion will be a valuable opportunity to establish an understanding of our different approaches to solving these problems, and also to engage on workable and viable solutions.
