DA saddened by passing of Dot Cleminshaw - Helen Zille

Party leader pays tribute to longstanding and leading member of the Black Sash

The Democratic Alliance was saddened to learn of the death of Dorothy ‘Dot' Cleminshaw, a life-long champion of justice and human rights, and an indefatigable opponent of apartheid. On behalf of the DA, I extend my condolences to the Cleminshaw and De Waal families.

Dot Cleminshaw served for decades as a leading member of the Black Sash, organising protests, suffering the intimidation of the security police, being arrested several times and assisting the underground resistance movement. She also variously served in the Torch Commando, the Defence and Aid Fund, the Civil Rights League, the End Conscription Campaign and many other organisations all of which shared the goal of a more just and free South Africa.

In 2002, Dot was awarded an honorary Master's degree by the University of Cape Town for her contribution to the cause of civil rights and justice. Most recently, in 2010, she was awarded the Order of Luthuli in silver for her "excellent contribution to an equal, just and democratic society".

South Africa has lost an unwavering campaigner for democracy, and a true constitutionalist. We are all poorer for her loss. Our thoughts and our prayers are with her family in this time.
