DA welcomes CoCT interventions in Khayelitsha during flooding

19 June 2023

The DA in Khayelitsha wishes to thank the City of Cape Town for their quick reaction during the recent floods and for their ongoing efforts to help affected communities in the area.

While we welcome the rain as dams were running low, these downpours have adversely affected many households in Khayelitsha as roads and homes were flooded.

DA councilors, Ms Nondumiso Mvinnyelwa, Mr Topollo Mokhathi and Mr Phindile Maxiti, together with dedicated city officials, quickly addressed the community’s concerns, and also visited informal settlements in Khayelitsha Site C and B that were affected by the floods. We welcome the cooperation between city officials and Khayelitsha's councilors for tending to the community's needs during this crisis.

Sadly, many residents were displaced as a result of the floods and now temporarily reside in the Andile Mzizi hall. We welcome the councillors and city officials who visited these families.

All roads that were flooded were also quickly unblocked. We thank the community for not dumping objects in the manholes, which could result in more flooding. Flooded roads, such as Aliam Drive, Bonga Drive and Japhta Masemola, to name but a few, are clear now, and traffic can flow smoothly.

Interventions by the City of Cape Town includes reducing the impact of flooding on the informal settlements built on wetlands by placing large stones around the area to ensure that it is not waterlogged.
