DA Youth condemns racist attack at UFS
The DA Youth condemns the latest racist attack that happened at the University of Free State yesterday. It has been reported that two white students intentionally drove over a black student with a bakkie. When the black student confronted them, he was beaten up. The attacked student is now in hospital (see report in The Times).
We view acts such as these are highly alarming because our generation should be taking the country forward given our racially motivated past. The youth is the only hope South Africa has of becoming a truly inclusive society.
We are aware of the diversity training that has been taking place at the university, but clearly a stronger approach is necessary. We want encourage students to speak out and report any incidents of racism which take place on this campus, but all campuses across the country.
We will be watching this case very carefully to see that justice is served. Universities are meant to be a place where students are groomed to be leaders in society. It cannot become a place where someone has to fear for their lives for because of their skin colour.
