DA’s litigation against president frivolous and unwarranted - ANC

Party says Ramaphosa has a constitutional obligation to inform South Africans about matters of public interest

ANC response to DA litigation regarding President’s televised address

25 July 2024

The African National Congress (ANC) notes the court process initiated by the Democratic Alliance (DA) against the televised address by the President of the Republic, Comrade Cyril Ramaphosa, on the 26th of May 2024.

The ANC reiterates that the President of the Republic has not only the right but also the constitutional obligation to inform the public about matters of public interest. This constitutional duty knows no bounds of time or day and remains in effect for as long as a person holds the office of President of the Republic in accordance with the Constitution of South Africa. In this regard, President Cyril Ramaphosa violated no law by fulfilling his constitutional mandate.

The ANC firmly believes that the DA's litigation is frivolous and unwarranted. At a time when we should be united in focusing on the crucial work of government, addressing the needs and concerns of our citizens, we find these legal actions to be unnecessary distractions.

The ANC remains committed to the principles of transparency and accountability, among which is the crucial need for the President to fulfil his constitutional obligations to keep the public informed. We call on all political parties to prioritize the well-being and progress of South Africa over partisan disputes and to work collaboratively towards a better future for all.
