Death of former Judge President Ernst Lichtenberg
The Democratic Alliance regrets the passing of former Free State Judge President Ernst Lichtenberg.
Judge Lichtenberg, who retired in 2003 after more than a decade as Judge President, is remembered for his devotion to duty and the thoroughness of his work. At a time when Chief Justice Ngcobo and the Judicial Service Commission are taking decisive action on reserved judgments that remain outstanding for unacceptably long periods of time, colleagues in Bloemfontein recall how Judge Lichtenberg eschewed all festivities one New Year's Eve and worked until midnight to complete a judgment because he believed the year's work should be completed within the year.
We extend our condolences to Mrs Lichtenberg and to Judge Lichtenberg's children and their families.
Statement issued by Dene Smuts MP, DA Shadow Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, April 28 2011
