Deployment of 25 000 additional SANDF members – Francois Rodgers

Party’s provincial leader says SAPS have clearly not been in a position to deal with the destruction

#KZNisBurning: DA pressure sees deployment of 25 000 additional SANDF members to the province

14 July 2021

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal, welcomes the additional deployment of 25 000 additional SANDF members to the province from tomorrow – a rollout which will include mechanized vehicles and helicopters.

The DA has consistently highlighted the crisis unfolding in our province during the past few days. In particular, we have called for more boots on the ground to quell the anarchy and looting taking place.

This additional deployment of resources is the result of continued pressure by both the DA leadership in KZN, our Federal Leader, John Steenhuisen, and our National Assembly counterpart, DA Shadow Minister of Defence, Kobus Marais.

Our provincial SAPS have clearly not been in a position to deal with the destruction. Neither has KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala, who until his appearance today has been watching the anarchy from the shadows.

For too long, the Premier of KZN has ignored the plight of the residents of our province, continually underplaying the magnitude of the anarchy, looting and destruction of property. Instead, his sole aim has been to secure the release of former President Jacob Zuma.

The DA remains committed to placing the interests of the people of KZN before that of any individual.
