COPE welcomes the Cape High court decision

Johannesburg, 23 May 2010: The Congress of the People welcomes the decision by the Cape high court that rejected the urgent interdict by the the President of COPE Mosioua Lekota and the party's spokesperson Phillip Dexter to stop the Western Cape Provincial Congress that took place over the past weekend. We are pleased with the decision of the court to reject the urgency of the application and therefore postponing the matter to heard on Thursday, 27 May 2010. It is unfortunate that desparate tactics are being employed by senior party members to undermine internal democracy of COPE.

The Congress of the People congratulates the Western Cape leadership on its successful provincial congress that emerged with a democratically elected leadership at its inaugural elective congress. Following COPE's successful Gauteng Elective Congress and Provincial General Council, and the successful Provincial General Council of the North West, the secretariat is pleased that the party's members are participating in structures thus strengthening internal democracy while forging unity within the party. The party Secretary General, Charlotte Lobe said, "as we are in the final stretch to COPE's landmark elective congress, all sorts of tricks are and should be expected from any where to derail the conference, including court battles. We must reiterate, provinces are ready for conference and Congress Preparatory Committee would like to thank all the members that are working around the clock to ensure that the Congress of the People does not disappoint the 1.3 million plus voters and the many South Africans that believe in the party's Agenda for real Change and Hope for all".
