DHS institutes lifestyle audits for housing inspectors after calls by the DA
2 June 2023
We are pleased to announce that during the portfolio committee meeting held on 31 May 2023, the Minister of Human Settlements, Mmamoloko Kubayi, acceded to the DA's request and agreed to implement lifestyle audits for housing inspectors.
This comes after the DA raised concerns regarding allegations of corruption between building inspectors and contractors, which has resulted in substandard and hazardous houses being provided to beneficiaries.
It has been observed that beneficiaries have received deteriorated houses due to alleged collusion between building contractors and inspectors. Despite these houses not meeting building standards, they were falsely approved by inspectors. Furthermore, the lack of visibility of building inspectors, particularly in rural areas, has facilitated a corrupt network that hampers building projects.
Recognizing the urgent need to address these issues, the DA urged the Department of Human Settlements (DHS) to initiate lifestyle audits on all housing inspectors. This measure aims to eliminate the ability of unscrupulous builders to prescribe low-quality building materials and exploit gaps in the system to reduce building costs.
