Diepsloot protests: A call for effective law enforcement and community safety

21 June 2023

The DA in Johannesburg notes the concerning escalation of ongoing protests in Diepsloot, now entering their third day. Diepsloot has been the epicentre of several violent protests in the past, often resulting in the looting of local businesses.

Despite the presence of both the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), as well as a City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services fire station at the entrance to Diepsloot, the area continues to grapple with a high crime rate.

Diepsloot was ranked 394 out of 1 158 on the National Serious Crime Risk Rank in 2022, categorising it as a "lower risk" area. However, these statistics may be misleading. From January to March this year alone, at least 20 people were unlawfully killed in Diepsloot.

Authorities, particularly Crime Intelligence, must be vigilant for opportunists who may turn these protests into a looting spree. I have received a tip-off that looters are preparing to strike, and I urge residents, businesses, and motorists to remain on high alert.

While we understand and respect the residents' right to protest and their anger, it is counterproductive to exacerbate the situation through violence and destruction. This only diverts law enforcement resources from their primary task of patrolling the streets and apprehending criminals.

The residents of Johannesburg need more than just police visibility; they need effective law enforcement that solves cases, arrests criminals, and ensures they face justice.

As the newly appointed DA Johannesburg Shadow MMC for Public Safety, I am committed to holding law enforcement in the City accountable. I have submitted questions in council about the JMPD's action plan to combat crime in Diepsloot and its surroundings. If no such plan exists or resources have not been approved, I will ensure that this is rectified.

Our residents deserve safety, and I am committed to making that a reality.
