GAUTENG HEALTH HEAD RESIGNS

I am dismayed that Dr Hugh Gosnell, Head of the Gauteng Health Department, has resigned with immediate effect.

He has left after only a year in office, and is the fourth department head to have left in the last four years.

Previous heads were Sybil Ngcobo who left in 2010 under a cloud, Kamy Chetty who left for unexplained reasons in 2011, and Nomonde Xundu who resigned in 2012.

This department has suffered from a high turnover of senior officials.

Last month Chief Financial Officer Ndoda Biyela was suspended on corruption allegations.

Gosnell's departure is bad news as he is untouched by corruption and was trying his best to improve performance.

It appears that he was forced out by Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu who likes to place loyalists in key positions.

I hope that his replacement is appointed soon based on competence not cronyism.
