DA mayoral candidate says ANC-coalition has collapsed services

Ekurhuleni has 4000 critical vacancies, as ANC-coalition collapses services

28 October 2021

The ANC-PA-IRASA Coalition government in Ekurhuleni has allowed 4000 funded positions to remain vacant while service delivery collapse around the municipality.

There is not a single department in the municipality that is not understaffed.

Ekurhuleni has a total funded staff compliment of 21 000 posts, however, under the coalition of corruption, the vacancy rate has been allowed to mushroom to 19%.

Service delivery in Ekurhuleni is at an all-time low, as highlighted by the recent Public Protector ruling that found the city was in violation of the Constitution for failing to adequately collect refuse.

Instead, the municipality decided to outsource this function to tenderpreneurs who do not have the ability nor capacity to perform this crucial service.

As Eskom has moved the country to Stage 4 load-shedding, residents of Ekurhuleni have been plunged into sustained periods of darkness because of the overwhelming vacancy rate in the energy department.

This is coupled by the fact that this department cannot ensure crucial components are in stock because there is a complete collapse of store management – again, exacerbated by the vacancy rate.

Service delivery, the core function of municipalities, cannot be rolled out when there are no staff.

Municipalities run by the DA ensure that crucial positions are filled by competent, qualified and fit-for-purpose staff. This is the DA difference.

Electing a DA government into Ekurhuleni will result in rapidly filling funded service delivery positions to deliver residents services with immediate effect. And the DA will ensure that expensive tenders to do the work of municipal staff will be put to an end.

Next week, residents of Ekurhuleni can choose a new future and new direction for our Metro, by voting in a new government that can get things done! Momentum is building behind the DA, as we march toward Election Day.
