Elias Motsoaledi municipal managers receive massive pay hikes - SAMWU

Union says ordinary senior managers will now be paid R950,000

Limpopo Municipality adjusts manager's salaries by 50%

The South African Municipal Workers Union wishes to register its opposition towards the exorbitant salary hikes which the Management of a Limpopo Municipality, Elias Motsoaledi Municipality, has awarded to its management. It is uncalled for that management of this Municipality - which has never achieved an unqualified audit report - adjust salaries of management by up to 50% in some instances. An ordinary senior manager who was receiving R850000.00 will now receive R950000.00, many will receive much more - up to 50% more.

These kinds of decisions forces us to question the wisdom of this Council, as this matter was approved by council on the 3rd April 2012. The question that we will continue to ask is how council arrived at this flawed decision - which will plunge this Municipality into crisis.

We are therefore making a call to all powers that be, to ensure that these massive increases are reversed. We want to avoid a situation where our members - ordinary municipal workers - will also demand a 50% increase in their salaries because their superiors were given much more than they deserve.

This kind of behavior by council clearly demonstrates that we have councils that are infested with councilors that do not understand the legalities and the functioning of a council.

We demand an explanation from the Elias Motsoaledi council as to what or who made them take such a decision, since the Municipality has not been performing well and it has failed on numerous occasions to provide quality services to our people. This Council must look into the contracts of managers and establish whether there is provision for increases. We are convinced that this Councils decision was irregular.
