Employers must release workers to vote - ANCYL

League concerned that work demands will prevent voters getting to polls

ANC YOUTH LEAGUE CALLS ON ALL EMPLOYERS IN THE HOSPITALITY AND SERVICES INDUSTRY TO RELEASE THEIR WORKERS TO VOTE ON WEDNESDAY THE 18TH OF MAY 2011

16 May 2011

The ANC Youth League calls on all employers, particularly in Restaurants, Hotels, Garages, Shops and all other sectors to allow their employees to go vote on Wednesday, the 18th of May 2011.

The ANC Youth League is making this call because it has come to our attention that some employers, particularly in the sectors identified, are expecting their employees to report for work on Wednesday the 18th of May, in a manner that will deprive them the opportunity to vote. Wednesday is a public holiday and all employers should make concrete arrangements for their employees to ensure that they have the opportunity to exercise their democratic right of voting.

All ANC Youth League structures across the country will visit shops, garages, restaurants, hotels and all areas of work to inspect if employers have allowed their employees time and space to exercise their democratic right. The right to vote in South Africa is sacrosanct and was achieved through tireless and fearless battles and struggles of peace-loving, determined and committed people of South Africa.

Blood was shed, lives were lost, families were separated, leaders exiled and incarcerated for all South Africans to have the right to vote for a government of their own. It can never be correct that certain people will prevent voters from exercising their democratic right on the 18th of May 2011.

Once again, the message from the ANC Youth League is clear and straightforward: The ANC is the only movement is South Africa that deserves the democratic mandate of the people to continue governing in all municipalities. VOTE ANC.
