Establish Provincial Task Forces to tackle GBV – BOSA

Crisis reflects a deeply entrenched mistrust in the justice system, from SAPS to NPA

BOSA calls for establishment of Provincial Task Forces to tackle Gender-Based Violence

28 November 2024

Build One South Africa (BOSA) is calling on all nine premiers to take immediate action by establishing dedicated provincial task forces to address the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV).

The Commission for Gender Equality has highlighted alarming trends: not only are GBV rates rising across South Africa, but there is also a growing number of victims withdrawing cases. Many cite persistent delays in court proceedings and the extended timelines for finalizing DNA tests as reasons for losing faith in the system.

This crisis reflects a deeply entrenched mistrust in the justice system, from the South African Police Service (SAPS) to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). It is unacceptable that victims seeking justice are met with obstacles that perpetuate their suffering and allow perpetrators to evade accountability.

BOSA believes that restoring public confidence requires bold and immediate action. Provincial GBV task forces would play a critical role in:

1.      Streamlining Processes – Ensuring that investigations, DNA testing, and court proceedings are expedited.

2.      Supporting Victims – Providing the necessary resources, counselling, and protection for those who come forward.

3.      Delivering Justice – Prioritizing GBV cases to ensure swift and fair outcomes.

These task forces must operate with transparency and include partnerships with civil society organizations, survivors’ networks, and community leaders. Their establishment would signal a strong and unwavering commitment to combating GBV and upholding the rights and dignity of victims.
