Adoption of Expropriation Bill brings economy one step closer to economic junk status – Solidarity
Solidarity today described the adoption of the controversial Expropriation Bill by Parliament’s Public Works Portfolio Committee as bringing the South African economy one step closer to junk status.
According to Solidarity Deputy General Secretary Johan Kruger, the adoption of the said legislation by parliament may satisfy ANC voters in the short term but in the long term it will contribute to leaving the economy in tatters. “The recent Nene debacle has already caused untold damage to the economy. The ANC will now have to decide whether it wants to further paralyse an economy that has already been crippled by this piece of destructive legislation,” Kruger said.
“The onus is on President Jacob Zuma to determine the constitutionality of any legislation before signing it into law. We contend that the Expropriation Bill still raises many questions, and it is President Zuma’s duty to investigate the constitutionality of the said legislation,” Kruger said.
