Failed mayors must be fired, not redeployed - Kevin Mileham

DA MP to request clarity as to where former Limpopo mayors have been moved

Removed mayors must be fired, not redeployed

24 June 2013

The announcement by the ANC's Limpopo Provincial Executive Committee that senior officials within the province are being moved to improve service delivery is not a solution to the on-going crisis of poor governance at local government level.

We call on the ANC to walk the talk and fire corrupt government officials and not to simply move them elsewhere to continue with their poor track record.

I will write to the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to request that the committee seek clarity as to where these senior officials are being moved, and what implications it will have on service delivery.

I have also today submitted a range of parliamentary questions to ascertain:

the outstanding municipal reports that allude to blatant corruption and abuse of state resources amounting to billions of rands and;

the misuse of equitable share funding to finance municipal operational expenditure.

Until swift action is taken against all instances of corruption, and cadre deployment is done away with - once and for all - we will not find a permanent solution to worsening service delivery in ANC run municipalities.

It is high time that a clear message is sent to corrupt mayors and officials. We can do this by removing them, not rewarding them, for poor service delivery.

Statement issued by Kevin Mileham MP, DA Shadow Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, June 24 2014
