AfriForum saddened by fire damage in Cape Town and calls for rebuilding

AfriForum has taken note with shock and regret of the fire damage caused in Cape Town since yesterday and of the firefighters that have been injured while performing their duties.

AfriForum expressed sympathy to all those who have lost property and lauded those who are doing everything possible to bring the fires under control. It hopes that all responsible for this disaster will be found and held accountable for the damage caused, also to serve as a deterrent to others. Furthermore, AfriForum trusts that lessons will be learnt from the tragedy in order to prevent similar disasters in the future.

“It is also a sad day for heritage. The extent of the damage done to the Jagger Library of the University of Cape Town, the Rhodes Memorial and Mostert’s Mill cannot be fully determined yet. What is clear, however, is that the damage will be too great to be calculated in monetary value ‒ many of the book and other collections that were destroyed are probably irreplaceable. The damage leaves everyone in the country poorer,” says Alana Bailey, AfriForum’s Head of Cultural Affairs. She expresses the hope that the heritage landmarks will be rebuilt.

“A long recovery process lies ahead for everyone affected by the fires. AfriForum would like to be involved where possible and share information that becomes available. We appeal to the public to ensure that they and their animals remain safe and keep all those involved in our prayers,” Bailey adds.
