NUM perturbed by the high levels of intimidation, threats and violence
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has noted with serious concern the increasing levels of violence, intimidation and threats on the platinum belt. The NUM ‘s recruitment team as well as workers interested in re-joining the union have repeatedly been intimidated and threatened, whilst one former miner had his throat slit and his head banged with a knobkerrie yesterday whilst attending the rally at Wonderkop. On various occasions the police have not been able to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.
This happens in the wake of a peace accord signed in the mining industry through which all stakeholders have committed to promote peace and dissuade members from committing acts of violence. The NUM is alarmed at the levels of criminality perpetuated by foreign elements hell-bent at destroying the unity of the working class. The union appeals to the police to do everything in their power to bring the perpetrators to book.
Meanwhile, the worker that was reported dead earlier is alive, well and out of hospital. The NUM visited him earlier today.
