NO HOLIDAY FOR MOKONYANE AS GAUTENG HEALTH BLOCKS SHERIFF
Gauteng Premier Nonvula Mokonyane has vowed that all companies owed money by the provincial government will be paid by the end of this month, but yesterday a sheriff of the court was blocked from attaching assets of the Gauteng Health Department because of non-payment (see report in The Star).
It is reported that the department apparently owes a medical supply company R280 000 and ignored a warrant of execution of movable property issued in May. The sheriff had an order to attach 400 computers, 400 desks and 300 desks.
This shows yet again how empty Mokonyane's repeated promises are that all companies will finally be paid.
It's appalling that Gauteng Health officials obstructed the sheriff unlawfully. No-one is above the law, and government offices should be especially scrupulous in obeying court orders.
Mokonyane has said that no MEC will go on holiday this month unless all companies are paid. Both herself and Health MEC Hope Papo should stay in Johannesburg this December, and I suspect some other MECs as well.
