Glynnis Breytenbach to be charged with obstruction of justice - NPA

Former prosecutor accused of refusing to hand over her laptop during 2012 investigation

NPA drags Breytenbach to court

Johannesburg – DA MP and former prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach and her lawyer will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of obstruction and defeating ends of justice, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

Spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku said the hearing relates to an NPA investigation in 2012 in which Breytenbach was investigated for misconduct.

The NPA claims Breytenbach allegedly shredded relevant papers and wiped clean her laptop while she was still the head of the organisation's specialised commercial crimes unit.

“She and her lawyer Gerhard Wagenaar refused to hand over her laptop which was believed to contain evidence related to the case. She then wiped out her official laptop and shredded vital information connected to the investigation,” Mfaku told News24.

When contacted by News24, Breytenbach said she knew about her pending court case.

“I don’t know what they are charging me for, but I am aware that I have to be in court on Monday. That is all I can say to the media,” she said.
